History

The institution founded under Ankara School of Financial and Commercial Sciences started service in the field of Neurology in 1979 with Dr. Ali İhsan Baysal. After a short time Dr.Baysal left and Prof. Dr. Okay Sarıbaş who arrived in rotation from Hacettepe University continued the studies in the field of Neurology. Ass.Prof. Dr. Adil Çulcuoğlu also joined the staff. In 1982 Dr. Ceyla İrkeç was appointed as Assistant Profesor. The first research assistant was Dr. Feriha Özer who is currentlt an associate professor. Gradually a 5 bed inpatient service was established; EEG, EMG laboratories, a clinic, neuroimmunology, MS and headache polyclinics, epilepsy, dementia, movement disorders, cerebrovascular diseases clinic, a neuromuscular diseases polyclinic, and an intensive care unit was later added. Dr. Ali İhsan Baysal, returned as a Professor in 1988 and Dr. Ceyla İrkeç became professor in 1989.

The department of Neurology provided service in Dr.Muhittin Ülker Emergency Aid and Traumatology Hospital when it was first founded; in 1986 it shared the same building with the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Hospital in Gölbaşı Campus; in 1988 it operated from the first hospital building in Beşevler as a Neurology inpatient service with four beds and a 6 bed intensive care unit. Later, a private room was added. After the establishment of inpatient services in the new building, the Gölbaşı service was shut down and the neurology service was first moved to the 15th floor, then to it’s current place, the first floor in Block B. In 2002 an intensive care unit with 7 beds and in 2007 an intermediate intensive care unit with 8 beds were established.

Dr. Reha Kuruoğlu, who started as Assistant Professor in 1986 and was appointed Professor in 1996, joined the academic members. Dr. Erhan Bilir who specialized in G.U department of Neurologyin 1989 and appointed Professor in 2000, Dr. Ayşe Bora Tokçaer who was appointed Associate Professor in 1999 and entitled Professor in 2003 and Dr. Bijen Nazlıel who was appointed Associate Professor in 2003 and entitled Professor in 2009 have all started as research assistants and continue as academic members. In 2002, Associate Prof. Hayrunnisa Bolay Belen who specialized in Hacettepe University Department of Neurology joined the staff.

In 2003, Prof Dr Yahya Karaman from Erciyes University joined the academic members. In 2005, Dr Bülent Cengiz and in 2006 Dr Emine Belgin Koçer, who both had specialty training from our department, were appointed as academic members in our department. Prof Dr Ali İhsan Baysal retired in 2007. Dr. Bülent Cengiz was appointed associate professor in 2009 and Dr. Emine Belgin Koçer in 2010. In 2010, Associate Prof. Tuğba Tunç from Ministry of Health Ankara Training and Research Hospital and Instructor Dr.İrem Çapraz who had specialty training from our department joined our ranks. In 2011, Dr. Hale Zeynep Batur who received specialty training form our department was appointed as Specialist. Until this date, the number of polyclinics, EEG, EMG and loboratories increased to 4, and the Epilepsy Center which is used together with the Pediatrics Department is fully operational. The center will serve as a Video-Monitorization Unit in it’s new place. Trascranial Doppler ultrasound practices started in the year 2010. Our department has become a reference clinic in the fields of neuroimmunology, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases, headaches,epilepsy, dementia, movement disorders, cerebrovascular diseases and intensive care.
