Endocrinology - History

Gazi University Faculty of Medicine Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism was founded in 1988 by Prof. Dr. Metin ARSLAN. Prof. Dr. Metin ARSLAN started working as the Head of Department in 1988 and stil holds this position. Afterwards, Prof. Dr. Nuri ÇAKIR, Prof. Dr. Göksun AYVAZ, Prof. Dr. İlhan YETKİN, Assoc. Prof. Ayhan KARAKOÇ, Assoc. Prof. Fusun BALOŞ TÖRÜNER, Assoc. Prof. Müjde AKTÜRK joined the academics.

Prof. Dr. Göksun AYVAZ who is one of our academics worked on “pancreas islet isolation, static incubation and appointment of insulin” in 1997 with Prof. W.J. Malaisse at Brussels ULB University Laboratory of Experimental Medicine. Assoc. Prof. Fusun BALOŞ TÖRÜNER worked in Mayo Clinic in the USA for a duration of 6 months in 2004.

Our department joined European Group on Graves' Orbitopathy (EuGoGo) center in 2009. More than 20 international studies have been conducted in our department since it was founded.

Gastroenterology - History

Gastroenterology expert Assoc. Prof. Uğur Kandilci started working with the department of Internal Diseases in 1983. Assoc. Prof. Candan Tunçer joined the team in 1984 and Assoc. Prof. Selahattin Ünal joined the team in 1987. Department of Gastroenterology was founded in 1988 and Prof. Dr. Uğur Kandilci was appointed Head of Department. After its founding, all sorts of diagnostic and endoscopic operations have been conducted in the department of gastroenterology. Dr. Ahmet Görgül (gastroenterology expert-Assoc. Prof.) and Dr. Seren Özenirler (internal diseases expert-teaching assistant) joined the team in 1990, Dr. Şükrü Dumlu (gastroenterology expert-Assoc. Prof.) in 1995 and Dr. Mehmet Cindoruk (gastroenterology expert teaching assistant) and Dr. İbrahim Doğan (gastroenterology expert-teaching assistant) joined the team in 2002. Prof. Dr. Selahattin Ünal took over the position of department head in 2000.

Between the years of 1984 and 2002, our physicians who have completed a minor degree in the field of grastroenterology are Dr. Candan Tunçer (1984-1986), Dr. Seren Özenirler (1990-1993), Dr. Ziya Öztürk (1993-1996), Dr. Ümit Bilge Doğan (1995-1997 ), Dr. Mehmet Cindoruk (1995-1998), Dr. Fahri Yakaryılmaz (2000-2002), Dr. Sefa Güliter (2000-2002), Dr. Bülent Değertekin (2002-2005) and Dr. Tarkan Karakan (2002-2005). In the following period, Dr. Alper Sancak, Dr. Zahide Şimşek, Dr. Gülbanu Erkan, Dr. Meltem Ergün, Assoc. Prof. Hakan Alagözlü and Dr. Beytullah Yıldırım have received their expertise training in gastroenterology in our department. Dr. Eyüp Ekici and Dr. Memduh Şahin are currently continuing their gastroenterology minor training. Therapeutic endoscopic procedures we have been conducted in the Radiology department since 1990 (such as ERCP), are continued with broader opportunities in the new ERCP Unit established in 2002. The gastrointestinal motility laboratory established in 1992 is the first motility laboratory of Turkey and is still one of the reference laboratories in its field. Apart from providing routine services on all sorts of motility studies such as 24 hour ambulatory a Ph, 24 hour ambulatory gall reflux, anorectal biofeedback and gastrointestinal system barostat, opportunities are provided for various research and thesis studies. The proctology unit established in 1998 meets an important need on the topic of anorectal diseases. Our Liver Diseases and inflammatory bowel diseases surveillance policlinics have been providing routine services since 1998. There are currently 5 professors and 3 associate professors and 2 minor assistants conducting clinic and laboratory, theoretic and applied training in our department.

Geriatrics - Introduction

Geriatrics is a field of science that is interested in the health issues, diseases, social lives, functional lives, life qualities, feelings, cognitive problems of individuals at the age of 65 and higher and preventive medicine applications and ageing of the society. The need to solve the problems of the elderly in a single center by providing sufficient amount of time due to reasons such as the various changes that occur in the human body with ageing, the metabolisms of the medicines, the variety in the effect and side effects, the differences in the way illnesses appear and the course of the disease. At Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Geriatrics has actively started offering service in 2011. Currently, patient evaluations are conducted in every daily without appointments in policlinics in the main hospital and the additional building in Cayyolu. Moreover, inpatient services are also provided, although not in a very large scale. In our department, the elderly are also examined in terms of hypertension, coronary heart diseases, cardiovascular diseases and risk factors, chronic lung diseases, diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, general health check-ups and other internal diseases as well as prostate diseases, falls, fractures, osteolysis, calcification, incontinence (involuntary urine or stool), depression, dementia (dotage), the social and functional life of the elderly and correct usage of medicine. Every patient applying to our department undergoes a detailed geriatrics examination. Apart from the current complaints, every patient receives evaluation tests aiming to examine their functions in their daily lives at home. These tests are Daily Basic Life Activities Test, Lawton-Brody Instrumental Daily Life Activity Scale), nutrition evaluation test (Mini Nutritional Test), amnesia tests (Mini Mental Test, Clock Drawing Test), depression test (Yesavage Geriatrics Depression Scale), movement problems test (Mobility Test). The evaluation of the patients takes about 30-45 minutes.

Hematology - History

Gazi University Faculty of Medicine Department of Internal Diseases was established in 1983. Since 1983, Assoc. Prof. Rauf Haznedar who has taken on the responsibility of Hematology was assigned as the head of department. Department of Hematology opened the current cytometry laboratory in 1992 when the hospital serious problems in terms of patient beds, equipment and laboratory. Somecell culture studies were also conducted in this laboratory. In the first years of the laboratory, biologists Güllü Topal and İrem Akar have conducted valuable studies. This laboratory showed great improvements with the efforts of Assoc. Prof. Münci Yağcı in the field of molecular hematology. Apart from the establishment of the hematology department and the start of the hematology minor training, the initiation of the current cytometry laboratory helped the development of hematology in Gazi University. Dr. Kadri Yamaç in 1993, Dr. Gülsan Sucak in 1999 and Dr. Münci Yağcı became hematology specialists in 2001. Dr. Özcan Çeneli and Dr. Kadir Acar completed their hematology specialist training in 2004. Due to the importance of hematopoietic stem cell transfer gained in the early 1990s, staff was trained in this field and for this purpose Dr. Gülsan Sucak received training and a diploma in stem cell transfer at Duke University and Seattle FHCRC. Starting from 30.07.2003, Gazi University Unit of Stem Cell Transfer has conducted many autologous and allogeneic stem cell transfers. It has become an important education field and center where non-relative stem cell transfers are also conducted. Today, apart from the academic staff consisting of Rauf Haznedar, Gülsan Sucak, Münci Yağcı and Zeynep Akı, many hematology minor expertise training studies are conducted.

Nephrology - History

Prof. Dr. Müştak Özüer established the Hemodialyses Center in 1986. Then, Dr. Şükrü Sindel started working in the Department of Internal Diseases based on Nephrology as of February 1987. After the assigning of Prof. Dr. Enver Hasanoğlu as Dean in 1988, departments were established. Dr. Turgay Arınsoy, Dr. Musa Bali and Dr. Ülver Derici joined the team and the department started offering minor training. Prof. Dr. Müştak Özüer retired in 1992. Prof. Dr. Şükrü Sindel has worked as the head of department since then. Dr. Galip Güz in 2001, Dr. Yasemin Erten in 2002 and Dr. Kadriye Altok Reis joined the Nephrology team in 2003. 12 Nephrology experts have been trained in the Nephrology department since 1988.

There are currently 6 professors, 1 associate professor and 5 minor research assistants. Since 2009, Prof. Dr. Yasemin Erten has been serving as the Head of Department. Our main aim is to provide our patients with high quality service and to train physicians with the knowledge and experience in intensive care. Because we are a new unit, we still have a long way to go. Expanding our academic staff, training experts on minor degrees, being accredited worldwide and increasing the number of scientific studies are among our aims.

Oncology - History

There are currently 6 academics and 4 minor research assistants (Internal Diseases Experts). Prof. Dr. Mustafa Benekli acts as the Head of Department. Prof. Dr. Uğur Coşkun, Assoc. Prof.  Zafer Akçalı, Dr. Gökhan Çelenkoğlu, Dr. Emel Üçgül, Assoc. Prof. Ali Osman Kaya, Assoc. Prof. Emel Yaman Sezer, Assoc. Prof. Banu Öztürk, Assoc. Prof. Ramazan Yıldız, Dr. Umut Demirci, Dr. Önder Tonyalı, Dr. Meltem Baykara, Dr. Gülnihal Tufan, Dr. Aydın Çiltaş and Dr. Bülent Çetin are the physicians who have become medical oncology experts and/or academic staff in our department. All of the academics in our department have international training experience.

Many international and national studies are conducted in our department. The academics of our department are the founders of Anatolia Medical Oncology Association and Gastrointestinal Oncology Association and currently take active role in the administration of these associations. The academics of our department take active duty in many commissions under the Ministry of Health. They also act as administrators and members of scientific boards in many national meeting, congress and symposiums. Within the hospital, an average of 100 patients a day and an average of about 25 thousand patients a year are served. The chemotherapy center with a quality certificate providing service under the department conducts around 2500 chemotherapy procedures a month with its smiling and experienced staff.

Gazi University Faculty of Medicine Department of Medical Oncology continues its servies as an important and privileged cancer diagnosis and treatment unit in Ankara and Turkey with its Radiation Oncology, PET-BT and Gamma knife radio surgery units and academic staff.

Rheumatology - History

With Internal Diseases and Rheumatology specialist Dr. Berna Göker starting to work with Gazi University Faculty of Medicine Department of Internal Diseases, policlinic and consultation services on Rheumatology has commenced. Within a short period of two years, first Dr. Şeminur Haznedaroğlu and then Dr. M. Akif Öztürk joined the Internal Diseases Rheumatology team. Within this period, our department has completed its structuring as a department. Apart from the policlinic and consultation services it has provided since its founding, advance analysis and treatment procedures are also applied in the inpatient service of the department. Prof. Dr. Berna Göker, Prof. Dr. Şeminur Haznedaroğlu and Prof. Dr. Mehmet Akif Öztürk are on active duty within the department.

The need for intensive care units has increased with the ageing population, extended life span, new approached in the treatment of cancer, organ and tissue transplantations and advanced in treatment. As a result of this increasing need, our intensive care unit has been established on 14 February 2006 under the Department of Internal Diseases. In August 2006, it has become a department under Internal Diseases.

Internal Diseases Semi Intensive Care Unit was established in 2007 under the department of Intensive Care. This unit was restructured and received the name “General Internal Diseases Services” as of May 2009. It currently provides service under this name.

General Internal Policlinic on Floor Z joined our department in January 2011 and General Internal policlinic on Floor -1 joined us in March 2011.

Currently, our department conducts Intensive Care and General Internal services together.
