History

With roots going back all the way to the first vaccination, Immunology is a monumental field research and practice. Immunology is known in our country as the science of immunity. Today, it tends to devide into sub-fields and related immunology institutes can be seen being founded. It is worldwidely witnessed that sub-fields such as cellular and humoral immunity, tumor-cancer immunology, cancer vaccinations, infection immunology, effectiveness of vaccination and adjuvants, immunological techniques, allergic and oversensitiveness immunology are on the road to being independent departments on their own.

The department of Immunology at Gazi University School of Medicine is one of three in Turkey. The efforts to establish our department started in 2000 and the official foundation was achieved on February 27^th, 2001. The relatively new department of immunology continues its development. With two academic members in its foundation, our department now houses six academic members. Apart form undergraduate classes in the school of medicine, post graduate and doctorate studies of immunology are continued in the Healt Sciences Institiute. Two students have completed their studies as doctors of sciences while currently 5 doctorate students continue their studies in our department.

The Department of Immunology Research Laboratory is in the second floor of the Dean’s building. Our laboratory has a cabin with laminar flow, a Cellular culture room with carbondioxised-moist incubator, a Cytomix FC 500 device for current cytometry practices, a deep freezer of -80°C, various centrifuges, an electrophoresis tank and power supply, a HPLC (high pressure liquid chromatograph), an ELISA reader, an automated ELISA washer, an immune fluorescent microscope, an inverted microscope a light microscope, and a liquid nitrogen tank.

Research studies such as the preparing and optimizing ELIZA tests, purification of antigenes and antibodies, the hybridoma technology, production of polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies, immunovirology, the monitoring of cellular and emunctory immune system functions and the preparing of cancer vaccines are continued in our department. Several research and projects are also carried out with various basic science and clinical study fields within various faculties and disciplines in Gazi University.

Our department’s basic vision is to become a pioneering national and international center where solutions and products are developed according to our country’s needs.
