It was founded as the first department of The Basic Medical Sciences Division in 1980. It started with one academic member and one instructor. The first head of department was Prof. Dr. Turgut İMİR. The chronological list of all the head of departments is: 1980-1984 Prof. Dr. Turgut İMİR, 1984-1986 Prof. Dr. Sevgi TÜRET, 1986-1995 Prof. Dr. Turgut İMİR, 1995-2002 Prof. Dr. Semra KUŞTİMUR, 2003-2005 Prof. Dr. Seyyal ROTA, 2005-2008 Prof. Dr. Nedim SULTAN and Prof. Dr. Semra KUŞTİMUR since 2008.

The department of Medical Microbiology  started service in the Emergency Aid and Traffic Hospital as a part of ASFCS. In 1986 our Beşevler office moved to the ground floor. After 1989 the department moved to Dean’s building 2^nd floor in Beşevler campus. Apart from routine hospital services, researches are done in fileds of clinical microbiology, bacteriology, parasitology, virology, mycology and immunology. Since its establishment the department gives Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology classes in the school of medicine. In the era of its establishment the department used to provide classes for the Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmaceutics, Academy of Health Services, Faculty of Professional Education, Child Development and Home Economy. Today, our department teaches classes at the Academy for Nursing and the Faculty of Universal Eductaion. It also continues Microbiology Post Graduate and Doctorate programs in the Health Sciences Institute. The Microbiology post graduate and doctorate programs also performed Immunology programs until the year 2002.

Our academic members provide routine diagnostic services to our hospital from our research laboratory situated in the second floor of the Dean’s building. Prof. Dr. Nedim SULTAN and Assoc. Prof. Kayhan ÇAĞLAR is responsible for the central microbiology laboratory; Prof. Dr. Turgut İMİR and Assoc. Prof. Işıl FİDAN for the immunology loboratory; Prof. Dr. Semra KUŞTİMUR and Assoc. Prof. Ayşe KALKANCI are responsible for the mycology diagnostic laboratory; Prof. Dr. Seyyal ROTA, Assoc. Prof. Gülendam BOZDAYI and Assoc. Prof. Işıl FİDAN for the virology diagnostic laboratory’s routine services; Assoc. Prof. Meltem ÇIRAK is responsible for the molecular bacteriology diagnostic laboratory; Prof. Dr. Semra KUŞTİMUR and Ass. Prof. Dr. Funda DOĞRUMAN Al for parasitology diagnostic laboratory.
