History

 

Our department was founded under Gazi University School of Medicine in May 1997. Dr. Ali Fuat IŞIK who has been giving “Forensic Medicine” classes in our faculty since 1994 and who is also the “Emergency Service Chief” became the first head of department with the Assistant Professor title. After May 1997, Forensic Medicine classes were given in Gazi University Faculty of Law and Faculty of Dentistry. In addition, our department gives “Health Law” classes in Social Sciences Institute Post Graduate programs. We have also taught “Forensic Medicine” in Başkent University Faculty of Law between the years 1997-2001 and in Gülhane Military School of Medicine between the years 2002-2008. We currently provide periodical educational support to the City Health Administrative and many other institutions in the fields of “Forensic Medicine” and “Medicine Law”. 

Starting from the 1997-1998 academic year, courses for “specialty in medicine education” began and our first research assistant gained the title of “Forensic Medicine Specialist” in June 2001. Until today our department has schooled 8 “Forensic Medicine Specialist”, 5 of which teach as academic members at other universities and 3 work as “Specialists” in The Forensic Medicine Institution. We currently have no research assistants in our department.

 In April 2001, Forensic Medicine Specialist Dr. Birol DEMİREL, joined our department as an “Instructor” and was appointed head of department after the passing of our head of department Prof. Dr. Ali Fuat IŞIK on 25th April 2005. Dr. Birol DEMİREL became Assistant Professor in December 2004 and Associate Professor in December 2008. Associate Prof. Birol DEMİREL, works in the Forensic Medicine Institution Ankara Group Department Morgue Specialty Unit, as well as giving “examination of corpses” and “autopsy” classes to our departments research assistants and 6th year medical school students.

In December 2005, Forensic Medicine Specialist Dr. Taner AKAR joined our ranks as an Instructor, and gained the assistant professor title in December 2007. Ass.Prof. Dr. Taner AKAR, teaches “Forensic Medicine” classes in our university’s Medical School and Faculty of Law.

Curently we provide services for judicial authorities or for police forces who act in their name in cases of individuals who have to be examined concerning their bodily and psychological unity, vocational incapacity, disablement, illnesses caused by vocational accidents and provide judicial reports which can be subjects of compensation claims. We also take part in the Gazi University Child Protective Center.

As well as conducting scientific studies in various fields of Forensic Sciences, our department has sixteen articles in journals internationally indexed and thirty-three articles in national refereed journals.
