History

Our department started its academic activities at Emergency Aid and Traffic Hospital in 1983 after Associate Prof. Aysel Gürler from Ankara University came in rotation. During that time our department was trying to continue its academic and routine activities despite the lack of physical space and means. The department had a polyclinic in the Pediatrics clinic with no lighting, 6 patient beds and an academic member room.

After Associate Prof.Aysel Gürler returned to Ankara University School of Medicine in 1984, Associate Prof. Mehmet Ali Gürer was appointed head of department on April 1^st 1984. He continued studies and routine activities with three research assistants for two years. Those were truly difficult times for our department as it was for our whole faculty. In 1986 Dr. Meral Bozkurt  joined our academic staff as Assistant Professor. At the end of the same year all departments moved to Gazi Hospital. Here we had a better polyclinic with 13 patient beds. As much as we were content with the conditions and physical means of our new facility, our inpatient unit was moved to Golbasi Campus by the Dean’s office’s pressures, despite the fact that it was really not appropriate. This time, our working conditions worsened because of the separation and the lack of staff.

After Prof. Dr. Enver Hasanoğlu  was appointed as Dean in October 1988, our conditions improved because of the reasonable, standard, positive and constructive way he approached our department. The number of our academic staff increased. During this period Dr.Ayla Gülekon, Dr.Nilsel İlter, Dr.Meltem Önder joined our academic staff. Our research assistant numbers reached a reasonable rate. Our first PUVA device started operation in 1988. Mr. Hasanoğlu’s contributions to our department’s development as an administrator is truly grand.

In 1994 our polyclinic unit started service in Gazi Hospital. In the years after we reached an independent servis with 26 beds. Our studies and routine practices became more productive, enjoyable and peaceful. Dr.Burhan Aksakal, Dr.Murat Öztaş and Dr. Esra Adışen joined aou academic staff. We had 10 research assistants. Our department is today the most sought after dermatology clinics in the Examination For Specialty In Medicine (TUS) and gives specialties to only the highest ranking doctors.

Our research facilities developed throughout the years. Our academic members attended numerous national and international congresses and symposiums to present their findings while continuing their academic developments. They built close scientific and social relationships with dermatologists worldwide. We are proud to have organised many national and international congresses.

In concordance with the development of the science of dermatology worldwide, new units were established in our clinic and developed. Our Phototherapy unit serves patients efficiently with 2 UVA, 1 narrow band UVB and a UVA 1 device. In addition, dermatological surgery, Contact Dermatitis, Dermoscopy,  Fungus laboratory and hair disease units continue to function. OUr department is a center for Psoriazis treatment. Patients come from all over the country to the psoriazis clinic and are treated with modern methods.

The Gazi Dermatology family houses an academic staff of six professors, an associate professor and 10 research assistants. We look towards the future with hope.
