History

 

The department of public health was founded by the appointment of Associate Prof. Hikmet PEKCAN as an academic member and head of department. Dr. M. Ali BUMİN and Dr. Berdan AKALIN started their duty in our department in 1981 and Dr. Çiğdem BUMİN in 1984.

With a protocol signed with the Ministry of Heath in 1984, the Gölbaşı Training District Adinistration service area became also Gazi University’s Training and Research District. This way, our medical faculty’s Term 6 students had the chance to perform rural medicine. Student dorms have been completed in the yards of Gökçehöyük, Beynam and Ahiboz community clinics by our faculty.

Starting from the 1984 –1985 academic year, public health internships in the community clinics commenced with the option of our students’ accommodation in the dorms.

Dr. Hikmet PEKCAN, who acted as hep of department until 1988, was appointed as the founding Dean of Gaziantep School of Medicine in 1988 and left our faculty. Prof. Dr. M. Ali BUMİN was elected as head of department and continued his duty until 2009. Dr. Remzi AYGÜN was appointed Assistant Professor in 1989 and Dr. Sefer AYCAN instructor in 1990. Prof. Dr. Sefer AYCAN was chosen as head of department in 2009 and still continues this post. Prof. Dr. Berdan AKALIN was superannuated in 1994 and Prof. Dr. Çiğdem BUMİN retired in 1995. Dr. Işıl MARAL started working in our department as instructor in 1997, Dr. Seçil ÖZKAN in 2000, Dr. Mustafa N. İlhan and Dr. Nur Aksakal in 2004.

As of 2009 our department houses 7 academic members and 2 research assistants. Our academic members are: Prof.Dr. M. Ali BUMİN, Prof.Dr. Remzi AYGÜN, Prof.Dr. Sefer AYCAN, Associate.Prof. Işıl MARAL, Associate.Prof. Seçil ÖZKAN, Associate.Prof. Mustafa N. İLHAN, and Associate.Prof. F. Nur AKSAKAL. Specialty, doctorate and post graduation education has been a part of our department since it’s foundation; 19 individuals have specialized in public health and 20 individuals completed their public health doctorates.
