History

 

The department of Nuclear Medicine was founded in 1989 by Prof. Dr. Nahide Gökçora with the contributions of Prof. Dr. Hikmet Bayhan with research assistant Dr. Neşe İlgin Karabacak and research assistant Dr. Meltem Dalyan completing the academic staff Prof. Dr. Nahide Gökçora was the first head of department. With the current head of department Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ünlü, the other academic members Prof. Dr. Tamer Atasever, Prof. Dr. Özlem L. Kapucu, Prof. Dr. Mehmet T. Kitapçı, Prof. Dr. Neşe İlgin Karabacak and instructor Dr. Ümit Özgür Akdemir the department performs training, research and patient monitoring with its increasing academic staff, physical capacity and technical equipment.

The department has schooled 24 nuclear medicine specialists and has received the UEMS (European Union Medical Spacialists) accreditation in the field of nuclear medicine training. Over 15000 patient monitorings have been made in the PET-BT unit which has been in operation since 2004. The department was refurbished in 2008 by installing double-headed gamma cameras of the latest technology and workstations. Besides ambulatory low dose radionuclide treatments, patients can be accommodated in the recently established two radionuclide treatment rooms and given high dose radionuclide treatments.
