History

The efforts to establish the department of Neurosurgery began in early 1978 in parallel to the efforts to establish Gazi University Medical School with a proposal from Prof. Dr. Onur Kumbaracıbaşı, the head of Ankara School of Financial and Commercial Sciences, to Dr. Hızır Alp

The faculty actually started its service in September 1979 at Ankara Traffic Hospital. In the same year Dr. Hızır Alp, accompanied by specialist Dr. Necdet Çeviker and specialist Dr. Kemali Baykaner resigned from Ankara Numune Hospital and joined Gazi University Department of Neurochirurgia as academic members and thus layed the foundations of today’s Gazi University School of Medicine Department Of Neurosurgery. Dr. Şükrü Aykol and Dr. Mustafa Çengel were the first research assistants. In addition to the first research assistants, Dr.Toygun Orbay, retired today, joined the department. As the efforts continued, with the appeals of several universities in Turkey, State Council stopped the foundation of the department on grounds that it was not legal, but the efforts continued after the ruling of the supreme court in favour of the foundation of the department. After the 1980 Military Coup and the establishment of the Higher Education Council (YÖK), the faculty gained legas status wşth the name “Gazi University”. Even in those troubled times, the department of Neurochirurgia provided the greatest contribution in the development of the faculty. Dr. Necdet Çeviker was sent to Germany, Dr. Kemali Baykaner to England and Dr. Toygun Orbay to Sweden in order for them to develop their trainings and increase their knowledge and with their return, the department of Neurochirurgia took its rightful place with more solid foundations in the community of Turkish Neurochirurgia.
