History

 

October 2nd 1979  It was founded as a part of Ankara School of Financial and Commercial Sciences and Associate Prof. Neşet GÖKOK was elected as the head of department.

November 8th1979  Started functioning as a 32 bed clinic at Dr. Muhittin Ülker Emergency Aid and Traffic Hospital in Balgat, Ankara.

July 20th 1982 With the establishement of Gazi University as a result of the delegated legislation concerning Higher Education in 1982, it became a department of Gazi University. 

June 1986 Started service with 37 sevice and 6 intensive care beds in its own hospital constructed in Beşevler.

February 17th1992  Prof. Dr. Atilla ENGİN was elected head of department.

April 16th1992  “Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgery Foundation” was established with its center being the the Department of General Surgery.

May 2nd1992  Inpatient data processing and recording system started functioning.

June 22nd 1992 The first laparoscopic cholescystectomy operation was performed.

April 1st 1994 The Department of General Surgery Specialist Student was approved by the Training Program Department Academic Council.

September 29th1994 Academic members and general polyclinic services moved to Gazi University’s new polyclinic building, floor 7. 

February 24th1995 The department of general surgery “Total Parenteral-Enteral nutrition unit” entered into service.

September 13th 1996 The first renal transplantation was performed.

January 10th1997 “The Endoscopy Unit” was established.

March 21st1997 “Department of General Surgery Post Graduation Training ProgramCrediting System” Genel Cerrahi Anabilim Dalı Mezuniyet Sonrası Eğitim Programı Kredilendirme Sistemi” was approved by the Training Program Department Academic Council.

September 28th1997 With the new inbound service of Gazi Hospital, 54 service and 6 intensive care beds were added to service.

January 9th1998 Department of General Surgery Specialty Training Guide was printed.

February 26th 1998  İSO-9001 Department of General Surgery Regulations and Procedures were prepared and applied.

April 17th 1998 Stomatherapy unit was established.

November 26th 1998 The first liver transplantation was performed.

December 18th 1999 The studend classbook “General Surgery – Diagnosis and Treatment Principles” was printed. 

February 11th 2000 Surgical proctology diagnosis and treatment unit was established. 

March 2nd 2001 The post graduate training programs of Endoscopy, Proctology and Stomatherapy was accepted by the “Academic Coucil” 

September 28th 2001 It was decided by the Academic Council for the Department of General Surgery to cease all its responsabilities and activities in “Transplantation Surgery” 

April 12th 2002 The department of General Surgery’s Graduate programs of Term 4 and Term 6 were restructured according to the principles of “National and institutional core training program” 

March 19th 2002 The department of general surgery devided in to four study groups; “General surgery, Mammoplasty-Endocrine Surgery, Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery and Colorectal Surgery” 

November 15th 2002 The “Total Parental-Enteral Nutrition Unit"’s all activities were transferred from the Department of General Surgery to the “Central Nutrition Unit” with the decision of the Faculty Board.

On 13.01.2004 Prof. Dr. Mustafa ŞARE was elected head of department.

The academic council decision made on 22.10.2004 was approved by the faculty board and the Department of General Surgery started working in four groups; A, B, C, D.

On 13.01.2007 Prof. Dr. Mustafa ŞARE was elected head of department a second time 

Patients with ostomy who have been operated in our hospital are treated and trained in our department’s Ostomy Unit. Wound care is also provided. In this unit, with the help of our academic members, trainings for Ostomy Nursing education are given nationwide.

In our department’s Endoscopy Unit diagnosis and treatment is provided to patients with surgical problems. Processes such as polypectomy, mucosal resection, percutaneous gastrostamy and band ligation are interventionally performed.

In our endoscopy unit, training programs for General Surgery Specialists are taught in cooperation with Turkish Surgery Foundation.
