History

Gazi University Department of Thoracic Surgery started its activities on May 17^th 2002 after the department of Thoracic-Cardiovascular Surgery was devided into two separate departments. Dr. Sedat DEMİRCAN who was an Associate Professor then, and who became a Professor in 2005 participated in the department’s foundation. Dr İ. Cüneyt KURUL who was an Assistant Professor then and who became Associate Professor in 2007 participated in the department’s foundation actively. In 2010, Dr. A. İrfan TAŞTEPE joined the department as Professor from Atatürk Pulmonary Diseases Hospital and became the head of department in 2011. Our faculty’s department of Thoracic Surgery currently houses three academic members; two professors and an Associate Professor  Department of Thoracic Surgery continues to serve with 8 service and 4 intensive car unit beds.

In the Department of Thoracic Surgery, modern Thoracic surgical techniques and surgical interventions are performed on pathologies and illnesses like all thorax pathologies of adult and pediatric age groups; diagnosis, stageing and surgical treatments of lung cancer; tracheotomy, surgery of pleura diseases (benign and malign tumour, empyema, effusion etc.), thorax wall malignites, mediastinal pathologies, diaphragmatic diseases, oesophagus surgery, bening tumours of the lung, cysts, bronchiectasis and parasital diseases.
