| Glaucoma (* ) | |

Gazi Ophthalmology Clinic Glaucoma Unit was establishe in 1989 by Dr. Merih ÖNOL. Dr. Zeynep AKTAŞ joined the Glaucoma unit in 2010. In our Glaucoma Unit, patients who arrive with early or advanced stages of Gaucoma are subjected to diagnostic tests such as pachymetry, field of vision, nerve fiber analysis and ultrasound biomicroscopy; and later surgically treated. In addition to trabeculectomy, cataract surgery, combined faco-trabeculectomy, seton surgery, congenital glaucoma surgeries, argon laser iridotomy and peripheric iridotomy processes are performed. |
| Cornea Unit(* ) | |

Dr. Fikret Akata performed a fellowship in the University of Washington after completing his residency in 1989. He then returned to Gazi University Dpeartment of Ophthalmology and founded the cornea unit. The studies in the unit have concentrated on penetran and deep lamelle keratoplasty, ocular surface and and frontal segment reconstructive surgeries, frontal and rear segment combined surgeries. Eye banking studies which have been carried out meticulously were restructured in 2005 according to the latest regulations and was certified by the Ministry of Health. |
Oculoplastic and Orbita Unit
Gazi Ophthalmology Clinic Oculoplastic and Orbita Unit was founded by Dr. Mehmet Ünal in 1992. Dr. Mehmet Ünal performed studies on the fields of Oculoplastics and Obita in London’s Moorfields Ophthalmology Hospital. In 2001 Dr. Onur Konuk joined the Oculoplastic and Orbita Unit as an academic member. In our unit, advanced surgical treatments are performed on patients who arrive with eyelid diseases, lacrimal diseases, socket problems and orbita diseases. Orbitotomy surgery for orbita tumour excision is routinely performed in our unit. The first orbita decompression in tiroid orbitopathy in our country was performed in our clinic in 1994 and this procedure was applied to 190 eyes between the years 1994 and 2009. As of 2004 endoscopic DSR surgeries are routinely performed in our clinic. In addition to standard oculoplastic surgical equipment, our unit has special instruments such as nasal endoscopy, diod laser da Standart oküloplastik cerrahi enstrümanlarına ek olarak bu birimimizde nazal endoskopi, diod laser dacryocystorhinostomy, surgical micromotor system and headülamp camera system.

| Pediatric Ophthalmology and Diplopia Unit(* ) | |

Pediatric ophthalmology and Diplopia unit was founded by Dr. Kamil Bilgihan in 1993. In 2010, Dr. Ahmet Hondur joined the unit as an instructor. In the unit, diplopia and amblyopia, pediatric cataracts, premature retinopathy and other pediatric eye diseases are treated |

Refractive Surgery(* )
Our refractive surgey unit which is one of Turkey’s first refractive surgery units was founded by Dr. Fikret Akata and Dr. Kamil Bilgihan in 1994. In 2010 Dr. Ahmet Hondur joined our unit as instructor.
Our unit studies have concentrated on excimer laser surgery, keratoconus treatments, lamelle keratoplasty with excimer laser support (Gazi Technique) and refractive surgery after keratoplasty. In addition, prosthetic contact lense, and different lense applications for keratoconus and aphakia are also performed.
As a result of the scientific studies carried out in the unit, it has won the ESCRS Poster first prize in 2000. Lamelle keratoplasty with excimer laser support techniques were published as a compilation titled “New techniques in lamellar keratoplasty” in the journal “Current Opinion in Ophthalmology”. In addition, these keratoplasty techniques were printed in the 2007 edition and the 2010 edition of the book called “Surgical Techniques in Anterior and Posterior Lamellar Corneal Surgery”.

Contact Lense Unit

Retina Unit(* )
Our department’s retina unit was established by Ass.Prof. Dr. Meral Or and Associate Prof. Berati Hasanreisoğlu in 1985. During this period, fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) and argon laser photocoagulation as well as vitreoretinal surgeries were performed in the diagnosis and the treatment of retinal diseases. The activities in the retina unit gained pace after Dr. Haluk Akbatur joined the unit in 1989. O sırada Doçent olan Dr. Haluk Akbatur who was Associate Professor at the time left the clinic in 1995, and Dr. Gökhan Gürelik who completed his residency in our clinic joined the studies in the retina unit as specialist in 1998. Today’s academic staff line-up was completed after Dr. Şengül Özdek, who also was schooled in our clinic, joined the unit.
Our clinic’s retina unit is one of the leading retina units in Turkey, and leads in various diagnosis and treatments. Our clinic is currently a fully equipped center where numerous and various 20G and 23G vitreretinal surgeries are performed 5 days a week. We also perform interventional processes such as FFA, argon laser photocoagulation, optical coherence tomography (OCT), photodynamic treatment (PDT), electrophysiologic tests, intravitreal treatments and transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT). 50-60 vitreoretinal surgeries are performed and 150-200 medical retina patients are examined each week and necessary ambulant treatments are provided.
