History

The history of Ear Nose and Throat Illnesses goes back to 1979. Our department  gained its juridical structure with the establishment of a faculty of medicine within the structure of Ankara School of Economics in June 1979. One of our founder members Associate Professor Necmettin AKYILDIZ had be come the head and the founder of the department as well. Later on in November 1979 Dr. Suat ÖZBİLEN had started to work as specialist doctor in our department.The first clinical practices were started in a service with 8 beds in Dr. Muhittin ÜLKER emergency and traffic hospital (Ufuk University). In a short time, Clinic, Policlinic and Surgery  Services had been organised and started to give service. Later on in 1983, Associate Professor Necmettin AKYILDIZ who had been promoted to the position of professor doctor had been assigned as the head of the department again. In 1983, Dr. Erdoğan İNAL had been integrated into the staff. Starting from 1984, Dr. Hayri ÖZŞEN, Dr Fikret İLERİ, Dr. Ahmet KÖYBAŞIOĞLU, Dr. Nebil GÖKSU and Dr. Ercüment AKMAN had been assigned as specialist doctors respectively. Our faculty had moved to its present location in 1986 and have continued its practices there. With the completion of the campus buildings of Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in 1994, our department has moved to its new and modern clinic with 26 beds where we have still been continuing our practices. Our department arranged many seminars, courses and conferences related to Otology, Neurotology, Rinology and head and neck surgery disciplines. And it has become the follower of the innovations, researcher and the implementer of the related subjects. Starting from 1990, as firstly implemented in Turkey, many post graduate courses, seminars and symposiums have been arranged on ear microsurgery, temporal bone dissection, cholesteatoma surgery, neurootology, nose and sinus surgery, snoring and obstructive apnea and head and neck tumours.

In 1993 Prof. Dr. Erdoğan İNAL had been assigned as the head of our department in accordance with the administrative mechanism flow. In 1995 Prof. Dr. Necmettin AKYILDIZ, the founder of our department, got retired. Prof. Dr. Nebil AKSU performed the position of head of our department between the years of 2003-2006. Prof. Dr. Suat ÖZBİLEN has been continuing his position as the head of the department since 2006.

At Gazi University Ear Nose and Throat Department, there are still 10 professors, 2 associate professors,1 lecturer, 1 specialist doctor and 16 research assistants in charge. 51 colleagues of us have graduated and been assigned as ENT specialists.

In our department, approximately more than 45.000 patients have been treated annually and more than 4000 surgeries are practised. Besides, more than 20000 patients are treated at Prof. Dr. Necmettin AKYILDIZ hearing, speaking, voice and equilibrium disorders diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation center.
