History

In 1992, Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Köker started the purchasing of radiotherapy devices with the loans from the French Govenrment. On August 24th 1993, Dr. Müge Akmansu was appointed as the first radiation oncologist academic member of the hospital. In the same year the constructiom for the radiation oncology treatment units commenced. After the completion of the construction and the device installations, the radiation oncology treatment unit was opened by Rector Prof. Dr. Enver Hasanoğlu on December 12th 1995. Our department continues to serve in the ground floor in Block B of Gazi University School of Medicine.

We currently possess 4 treatment devices and 1 cat scam simulator. Halen bölümümüzde 4 tedavi cihazı ve 1 bilgisayarlı tomografi simülatörü bulunmaktadır. Two of the treatment units are a linear accelerator with the capacity of producing photons from 6 MV to 25 MV and electrons from 3 and 21 MeV, the others are a teletherapy device which uses radioactive cobalt source and one linear accelerator device with the IMRT (intensity adjustable radiotherapy) feature. 3D conformal radiotherapy and intensity adjustable radiotherapy are also applied in our department. In addition to these treatments our department contributes to the treatment of patients with a Gamma Knife treatment which can perform a focused radiation on intracranial tumours. Our department is one of few centers where child patients can be treated under general anaesthesia with the contribution of Department of Anaesthesia and Reanimation.

Radiation treatment takes for about approximately 1.5 months while depending on the characteristics of the illness and the patient. We have no inpatient services. However because of the location of our hospital cheap accommodation opportunities are available for patients who are consulted from other hospitals and cities. Apart from this. Apart from this, our patients can use the municipalty’s various accommodation services for free.

If we summarize the treatment process: the first stage begings with the evaluation of the patient, then the planning process begins with the BT simulation of the area to be treated. After the planning, the treatment process commences. Usually, the treatment is performed once a day, 5 dys a week. Since the patients stay from 30 minutes to an hour in our clinic, the majority can carry on with their daily activities.
